MOHALI: Warning against the purchase of desi ghee packs labelled 'Lite Ghee' or 'Pooja Ghee', the food safety teams have said that the product may be spurious as it is being made using fatty acid ester imported from East Asian countries which is mixed with hydrogenated vegetable oils to improve the RM value of the product.
Punjab food safety commissioner KS Pannu said desi-ghee adulterators can't go scot-free as the state government has now equipped the food safety labs in Kharar and Mohali with high-tech machinery.
Food safety department teams will start raiding malls, shops and manufacturing units in Mohali to seize the artificially-flavored desi ghee, he said.
Pannu said that the recent large-scale seizures of fatty acid ester in Punjab along with the artificial flavor of desi ghee had made the officials suspicious of its misuse in manufacturing adulterated desi ghee, but the old lab equipments could not ensure the same. "The old machines could test desi ghee only on the basis of its RM value which improves with fatty acid ester. However, with the new improved machines, the department we will be able to detect adulteration in desi ghee and penalise the offenders."
