Gopeshwar, Nov 3 (PTI) A food safety court here today imposed a fine of Rs four lakh on the company manufacturing pan masala brand Rajnigandha as it found some of its samples unsafe for human consumption.
The samples of Rajnigandha were found to contain a chemical--magnesium carbonate--and carmoisine colour which are injurious to health, the court said in an order released today.
The verdict imposed a fine of Rs four lakh on Dharampal- Satyapal group (DS group), the manufacturers of the product and a fine of Rs 15,000 on a Chamoli-based retailer who sold it in the area.
The food safety courts order came on a complaint filed by the Chamoli district food safety officer who had sent samples of the pan masala brand collected from the shop of local retailer, Meharwal Agency, to the government food and drug laboratory, Rudrapur in September 2014.
After the samples were found unsafe for human consumption both at the Rudrapur laboratory and the referral laboratory of food analysis in Pune, a complaint was lodged in the food safety court here against the manufacturing company and the retailer under the Food Safety Act 2016.
