The officials of the Tamil Nadu Food Safety and Drug Administration Department conducted a surprise check in shops and stalls at the weekly shandy in Karumanthurai on Saturday and seized 1,021 litres of adulterated oil .
The team, led by S. Mariappan, district designated officer of the department, also seized and destroyed outdated eatables and other products worth about Rs. 10,000 on the occasion.
Meanwhile, the Food Safety Department registered cases against five concerns last month on the charges of marketing adulterated goods. The officials conducted surprise checks in shops and manufacturing concerns in Salem city and in the towns of Attur, Sankagiri, Mettur, Edappadi and found adulterated sago, oil, pepper in the market.
The department booked five firms for marketing adulterated products and legal action was initiated against them.
