Chandigarh: A team of the Food Safety Department seized 180 kg of mangoes ripened by using calcium carbide in another raid carried out at the fruit and vegetable market in Sector 26 on Tuesday. The mangoes were seized and destroyed in the dumping ground of the city using MC vehicles. Food safety officers Bharat Kanojia, Surinder Pal Singh, Bhaljinder Singh, Mandeep Kaur, Nisha Juneja, Navneet Bagga and Amardeep Kaur conducted the raid in the early hours. Artificial ripening of fruits such as mango and papaya using calcium carbide is a common practice despite being prohibited under the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011. The use of calcium carbide to ripen fruits causes serious health problems.
