Delhi schools soon to replace junk food with nutritious and healthy food in canteens
New Delhi, May 11 (ENA) After ensuring that the private schools across Delhi do not hike the school fees beyond the prescribed limit, Delhi Government is now taking steps to ensure that the students eat only nutritious and healthy food at schools canteens.
The Delhi Food Safety department along with the Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) is working on a policy regarding what food should be given to students studying in the city's schools.
A meeting was held between the food authority and the city food department where the need to serve nutritious food to kids was discussed considering that health issues of students was of high priority.
"We will be working on the policy regarding the food served in the school canteens. The health of the students will be kept on high priority. Food items with high nutrition value will be majorly served to the students," said Dr Mrinalini Darswal, commissioner, Department of Food Safety, Delhi government.
"We will be speaking to various experts to understand the need of the students and will work on the policy accordingly," added Darswal.
In October 2015, the Food authorities had issued guidelines to schools, making it compulsory to serve only wholesome and nutritious food in their canteens.
The guidelines would, reportedly, be converted into a regulation in due course, after the prescribed process of inviting comments and suggestions from various stakeholders. (ENA Bureau)
