FDA official showing confiscated low quality pipe namkeen (kurkure) worth Rs 1.25 lakh
MAPUSA: In continuing with its crackdown against unhygienic food products, food safety officers attached to the food and drugs administration (FDA) seized about 1,020 kg pipe namkeen (Kurkure) at Karaswada. The truck was attached while the driver detained. Sources claim that detergents are being added to pipe namkeen along with non permitted colours.
On Saturday a truck bearing number MH-06 –AQ-230 which was carrying 1,020kg pipe namkeen (Kurkure) estimated to cost Rs 1.25 lakh was brought from Belgavi, Karnataka. The pipe nankeen is prepared by using non edible food colour, deep fried in oil and is sold in the Goan market without any label declaration.
It may be recalled that FDA has booked the said product in the past and the court imposed a fine of Rs 2.5 lakh on the accused. Similar consignment worth Rs 1.5 lakh was seized two months ago from Karaswada, Mapusa and was destroyed. The raid was conducted by officials Rajiv Korde, Amit Mandrekar, Richard Noronha, Madhav Kavlekar and Sainath Mandrekar under the guidance of Director DFDA Salim Veljee.
“Possibility of using of detergent in making pipe namkeen cannot be ruled out hence we have taken samples and have sent the same for analysis. Action will be initiated as per provisions of the law” said food and safety officer Rajiv Korde.
He further appealed to all parents that “eating such products can be harmful and hence children should not be given such food items which do not have any label declaration”.
