Tea Trade Association of Kochi wants the Union government to declare tea as India’s national drink. The appeal was made by Benzy Jose, chairman, at the 23rd annual general body meeting of the Association here on Tuesday. The Association said in a press release that tea was common man’s drink and the most consumed in the country. Efforts by all tea trade associations and Tea Board would succeed in the attempt to get the beverage declared as India’s national drink.
The Association has also complained of difficulties created for the tea trade because of the differences in the results of tests conducted by NABL-accredited laboratories and the State Analytical Laboratory at Kakkanad working under the Department of Health. The issue had been taken up with the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India and The United Planters’ Association of South India. The Association appealed to the government to do away with the tax on tea sold through auctions as it pointed out the e-auction facility, introduced in 2009, had made the business more transparent.
