PATNA: The state government has extended the ban ordered on all ready to eat noodles on August 1 for another month with effect from September 2. Eleven such brands, in addition to Maggi, are banned in the state.
Food safety wing senior official Muskesh Kashyap said two firms — Hindustan Unilever Ltd (Knorr noodles manufacturer) and ITC Limited Foods Division (Sunfeast Noodles manufacturer) had made a representation to the department, claiming they do not add monosodium glutamate (MSG) additionally. It was naturally found in the ingredients used by them. They also claimed theirs' were instant noodles, not dry ones in which MSG is not allowed at all.
Food safety wing officials are, however, not convinced. "Our contention is that these are dry noodles. In the light of representations by the firms, we wrote to Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) for further guidelines. We have not received any reply so far. Our next line of action will depend on FSSAI reply," said another official.
Bihar was the first and the only state to ban 11 brands in one go.
