Officials attached to the Food Safety Department burnt about two tones of banned tobacco products at the municipal compost yard in Vallankumaranvilai village near here on Wednesday.
The tobacco products in over 100 packets, seized from different places in Kottar area, were burnt in the presence of Collector Sajjansingh R. Chavan, said Designated Officer of the Food Safety Department Dr. W. Salodeesan.
He told The Hindu that the samples of the seized products were sent to the laboratory of the Food Safety Department in Palayamkottai. Based on the report that the seized tobacco products were unsafe, the department decided to burn them.
Nearly 2.5 tonnes of banned tobacco products, seized in the western part of the district, were burnt in a public place in the recent past, he added.
The officials had broken open a locked godown in Kottar area and seized banned tobacco products worth Rs. 30 lakh a month ago.
