Rotten meat seized from train at Chennai Central railway station

CHENNAI: Rotten meat, weighing 250kg, was seized Sunday morning from Tamil Nadu Express train that had arrived from Delhi at Chennai Central railway station. Food safety department officials acted on a tip off and found three parcels containing meat which had rotted on the 32-hour journey due to poor packaging.
Food safety officials disinfected the rotten mutton and disposed it. According to an official, meat must be transferred using a cold chain method and it is usually sent through vans with a freezer compartment that maintains temperature under five Degrees Celsius.
Food safety department designated officer Lakshmi Narayanan said, "The meat parcel appeared to have been packed two days ago." The insulated parcels which contained the meat were packed with ice that had melted completely.
The meat had not been certified as required by a veterinarian in the ante-mortem and post-mortem stages.
The sender of the parcel could not be traced due to fake address that had been provided on the parcel. The parcel was meant for a Chintadripet-based meat seller and we are investigating his whereabouts, Narayanan added.
"We have been tracking meat parcelled through unapproved methods with help from railway officials for the last three months," Narayanan said.
Six months ago, food safety officials had seized parcels of rotten meat from a train that had arrived from Andhra Pradesh at the Chennai Central.
