The Court of Judicial Magistrate, First Class (JMFC) Ponda, has convicted two food vendors' from Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu for selling pappadams declared unsafe and fined them Rs 20,000 and a default of 60 days simple imprisonment.
The duo were convicted for manufacturing and selling pappadams declared 'unsafe' under the Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and Rules/Regulations, 2011.
Food Safety Officer, Rajiv R Korde, of the Directorate of Food and Drugs Administration, Bambolim, had filed a prosecution case against the accused Mohammad Ameen of Limra Traders in Coimbatore and Nizam Umar Farooq of Merces in Tiswadi, for selling the unsafe pappadams at the Goa Shopping Festival at Aguir Grounds, Ponda.
The snack was declared unsafe by the Director of the Referral Laboratory in Mysore, due to presence of non-permitted colour which was above permissible limit of 100 p.p.m.
