Ethnic food to make entry into Dasara fest this year

Have you tasted tribal food? If not, then don’t miss to visit this year’s Dasara Food Festival, which, for the first time, will be offering cuisines of tribals like Soligas, Jenukurubas, and others.
Soliga and Jenukuruba families reside in parts of H.D. Kote taluk, a tribal-dominated taluk of Mysore district.
Major attraction
In alliance with the large-sized Adivasi Multipurpose Cooperative Societies (LAMPS) and a Federation of Adivasis, stalls will be set up featuring tribal-style food items.
This would be one of the attractions of the food festival, said members of subcommittee overseeing the arrangements for the event.
Medicinal value
Another attraction will be the food items with medicinal value, which are also being featured for the first time.
This year, the festival will have 110 stalls featuring cuisines of North Karnataka to the mouth-watering cuisines from Kerala and north Indian States.
Coverage
About 20 food traditions, covering different districts in Karnataka and other States would be introduced for the benefit of tourists, they said.
Deputy Director of Food and Consumer Supplies K. Rameshwarappa, who is the working president of the Dasara Food Festival, told presspersons here on Friday that 271 applications had been received so far from individuals and hotels/restaurants from across the State.
Applications
The last date for receiving applications has been extended till September 15. “Stalls will be allocated based on the merits of applications,” he said.
The list of food prices had been collected from the applicants, along with the application, and the rate chart must be displayed in front of their respective stalls, he added.
Team
A team of officers from the departments of Food and Civil Supplies, Weights and Measurements and the Food Safety will monitor quality of food given to visitors.
“Maximum care will be given for hygiene and quality food,” he said and added that seminars would be conducted daily from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the venue — Bharat Scouts and Guides Grounds — to educate visitors on Food Safety and Standards Act.
Stalls selling organic food such as indigenous rice would function. Cooking and eating competitions and competition to identify foodgrains for children would be conducted.
Industrialist Suresh Kumar Jain, who is the president of the Dasara Food Festival, said cuisines from Gujarat, Rajasthan, and other States would be there to cater to all types of visitors. Managements of food processing industries in Mysore will display their food products at the festival.
Awareness
He said awareness would be created on opportunities of setting up food processing industries with the support from the Ministry of Small and Medium Enterprises, Government of India, which gives subsidy in the range of 50 to 80 per cent on the projects proposed for setting up such units.
