Gutka worth around Rs 14 lakhs was seized and one person arrested in this connection from Kalamboli area of Panvel in Maharashtra's Raigad district, a senior FDA official said.
Raigad's food safety officers intercepted a tempo coming from Hyderabad yesterday in Kalamboli and seized 9.90 lakh pouches of two brands of the banned tobacco product worth Rs 14.57 lakh, FDA's Konkan Joint Commissioner P M Raut said.
The cost of the seized goods in black market is about Rs 54 lakhs, he said.
The tempo driver, identified as Nisar Ahmed Siraj Ahmed Shah (30) of Govandi area, was arrested and booked under section 328 (causing hurt by means of poison) of the IPC, he said, adding that the vehicle used for transporting the gutka was also seized by the police.
The sale, manufacture, distribution and storage of gutka is banned under the Food Safety and Regulation (Prohibition) Act, 2011.
'Police have also taken into custody the vehicle used for transport of the illegal gutka and other non-food items,' Raut added
