The Punjab government has constituted a commissionerate of food and drug administration for the regulation of food standards and safety, drugs and cosmetics as per provisions of the relevant Acts and rules.
Stating this here on Tuesday, Madan Mohan Mittal, health and family welfare minister, said the state government had issued orders that the commissionerate would be headed by an officer designated as commissioner, food and drug administration.
The minister said the commissionerate would function under the administrative control of the administrative secretary of the department of health and family welfare. He said various posts of the headquarters and the field under the directorate of health and family welfare, dealing with the subjects of drugs, food safety and related issues, would stand transferred to the commissionerate.
Mittal stated that by constituting the commissionerate, proper rate and quality etc. of drugs and food articles would be ensured. He added that registration and licensing for selling food articles would also be necessary under the Food Safety Act.
