The Department of Horticulture has advised farmers and traders against
using calcium carbide to ripen mangoes. Calcium carbide is harmful to
health and so should not be used to ripen the fruit, Deputy Director of
the department said in a release. Action will be taken under the Food
Safety and Preservation of Food Act 2006 if the prohibited chemical is
used to ripen mangoes, the release said.
