The Food Safety and Standard Act 2006 made it mandatory for all vendors and eating joints to obtain licenses. But nor the registration of footpath vendors and eating joints is being done and neither the health department is collecting samples from them. Taking advantage of this, these people are selling adulterated food without any fear.
The repercussions of this are being borne by the common people. By eating the adulterated food items, these days, and a number of people are falling victims to cholera and diarrhoea.
The department is busy registering restaurants and big eating joints and new hotels, but so far not a single road side vendor's and small eating joints registration has been done. The work had to finish by August 4.
According to the doctors, the food items are sold in open without any impunity. These are prone to flies and dust. It is quite possible that people can fall sick after eating such food. Dr Ashwani, physician of a civil hospital said, "The water and food sold by these eating joints and foot path vendors has no guarantee about the purity. By eating this type of food, people can fall sick. This summer the number of patients suffering from intestinal diseases is on the increase. Daily 10 to 15 patients suffering from diarrhoea are coming to us. It is necessary for people to take precaution. The health inspectors should get all vendors and eating joints registered."
A month ago, four food safety officers with a team were given the responsibility to take care of the health of people in Gurgaon. And they were appointed to keep eyes on the quality of food materials sold at these places.
They were also given the responsibility to collect the samples of the food material from different parts of Gurgaon and make the test report available with 14 days and found adulterated food stringent action to be taken against people indulging in selling adulterated items.
On this the Deputy Commissioner V S Huda, told Cityplus, "The health officers are appointed and they are also making raids but as the number of small eating joints and road side vendors have increased in manifold so it becomes difficult to keep a tab on all of them and these people also can't be thrown out of the town as majority of people coming to Gurgaon to work depends on these joints."

As we have taken numerous samples and soon when found adulterated action will be taken."
