Chennai: The Madras high court has recommended to the government to pass an order within a week banning adulterated sago. The First bench comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice T.S. Sivagnanam, before which a petition filed by Kallakurichi Vellalapatti Vivasayigal Munnetra Sangam, Namakkal, came up for hearing, directed the authorities not to reopen sago factories, sealed on charges of manufacturing adulterated sago.
The bench said when tapioca was processed, the skin had to be removed. But in some cases, small manufacturers may not have the process to do so and without removing the skin, they processed it and gave it to large manufactures. Besides this, it was alleged that when whitening the sago, various harmful chemicals were being used.
Wet starch sold in the market created problems as local manufacturers purchased them for a low price. Chemicals were added to it and then sold. Hence, wet starch should be banned. The government should issue necessary orders on sale of wet starch. The court directed the food safety department to monitor the factories. It adjourned the matter to November 17.
