BIS inspection to be held at KWA’s bottled water plant

Thiruvananthapuram: ‘Thelineer’, the bottled water plant project of the Kerala water authority at Aruvikkara will soon become a reality. Inspection by a team from Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) will be held on Tuesday.
The certificates of BIS and Food Safety and Standards Authority of India are required for the commissioning of the plant that can generate bottled water of a total capacity of 7,500 litres per day.
KWA has also begun works for production of pet bottles. Tender for this work was delayed due to election model code of conduct.
‘Thelineer’ is expected to be launched in 500ml, 1 litre, 2 litre bottles and 20 litre cans. The rate of 500ml bottle will be Rs 10, while 1 litre bottle will cost Rs 15.
KWA has proposed a revenue sharing model for running the plant. The revenue sharing model, which is waiting to get government nod, aims at giving 12% of the profit to private parties which will operate the plant and market the product. Under this model, the contract will be given in a competitive tender.
The bottled water project in Aruvikkara was originally planned in 2006. KWA amended the Kerala Water Supply and Sewerages Act for the project in 2008.
The administrative sanction for the project was given in October 2013. Due to delay in awarding the project, the CAG report of 2013 had criticized KWA for its laxity to implement an income generating project.
After failing to get bidders, KWA spilt the project into civil, electrical and electronic segments for convenience of tender. The work began in 2015.
