After Maggi, Haldiram to be banned? Maharashtra government directs FDA to test products

Mumbai, July 9: After the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) banned the Maggi noodles across the country, other food products are also under scanner. The Maharashtra government on Wednesday directed its health regulator to check the products of Haldiram. The government asked the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to collect and test sample of Haldiram products from market.
Minister of State for FDA Vidya Thakur said she has written to FDA Commissioner Harshdeep Kamble regarding collection of samples and their lab testing. She has also sought a report from FDA at the earliest. The government’s order came after the reports emerged that Haldiram’s packaged products have been banned in USA. The US FDA department banned many Haldiram’s items saying that Haldiram products such as the cookies, wafers and biscuits are not fit for consumption, they are ‘filthy, putrid or decomposed-otherwise unfit’. “This is a very serious matter. Since Haldiram products are manufactured in the state and consumed by a large number of people, it is necessary to find out if the snacks are fit for human consumption,” Thakur stated in the letter.
The Nestle’s noodles brand faced the heat and was recalled from markets after tests showed it contained lead beyond permissible limits. Will the Haldiram products also face ban in Maharashtra? Few sample have been already collected from Nagpur. Let’s wait for the reports.
