JMC continues drive against adulteration, polythene, smoking in public places

Rs 22,500 fine realized, 31 Kgs banned material seized
Jammu, June 17: In continuation of its drive against food/milk adulteration, polythene and smoking in public places, the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) today realized a fine of Rs 22,500 from the defaulters and also destroyed sub-standard food on the spot.
The team of Health & Sanitation Wing of JMC under the supervision of Dr. Mohd Saleem Khan, Health Officer, inspected various food establishments across the Jammu City like milk shops, milk vendors, hotels, restaurants, provisional stores, food stalls, sabzi cendors, fruit juice corners / vendors, tea stalls, ice cream corners, etc at Panjtirthi, Bikram Chowk Residency Road, Maheshpura Chowk, Railway Station, Kunjwani, Gangyal, Preet Nagar, Narwal, Nanak Nagar, Shivaji Chowk, Indra Chowk, Janipur, Bantalab, Panjtirthi, New Plot, Mahesh Pura, Mubark Mandi, Talab Tillo and adjoining areas. 
The JMC team seized about 31 Kgs of polythene carry bags during the drive from different areas. A fine of Rs. 19450 was also imposed on defaulters.
During the extensive drive, about 20 Kgs of stale cooked food was also destroyed on the spot by the team as it was found not fit for human consumption. The food business operators were also directed not to sell any type of unhygienic food not conforming to prescribed quality and standards as it can seriously affect people’s health. 
The JMC warned that stringent action under Food Safety & Standards Act, 2006, shall be taken against the defaulters. The management of the hotels/ restaurants was also directed to rectify the deficiencies found during inspection. They were also advised to follow the guidelines laid down in Food Safety & Standards Act 2006.
About 50 kgs of milk was also checked and an amount of Rs. 2000/- was imposed as fine on those who were found to be selling adulterated milk. Those dealing with milk and milk products were also strictly warned not to sell adulterated milk and milk products.
Health Officer Jammu Municipal Corporation appealed to them to get renewed their food license before 4th of August 2014, otherwise action under rules shall be initiated against the defaulters.
Apart from this, about 09 persons were also booked under COTP Act 2003 and a fine of Rs. 1050/- was realized as penalty from those who were found to be smoking in public places. The citizens were also advised not to smoke in the public places.
The JMC also requested the people not to use the polythene carry bags and make Jammu City free of polythene in this rainy season.
