Maggi noodles clears final tests, relaunch likely late November

Nestle India is now in negotiations with local authorities to get bans lifted in various states
Five months after it was pulled from store shelves, Nestlé India’s bestselling product Maggi instant noodles is finally ready for a comeback after it cleared a final round of tests at three NABL accredited laboratories.
“We have received results from all three NABL (National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories) accredited laboratories mandated by the Hon’ble Bombay High Court to test newly manufactured MAGGI Noodles samples. All the samples of the MAGGI Noodles Masala have been cleared with lead much below permissible limits,” Nestlé India said in a statement today.
According to the Bombay High Court order dated August 13, Nestlé India needed to get newly manufactured batches of Maggi noodles retested in the three NABL-accredited laboratories in Jaipur, Mohali and Hyderabad before it could start selling.
Today’s results are, therefore, significant as it practically finally clears the decks for the FMCG major to start selling the product, which had been banned by the country’s apex food safety regulator – Food Safety & Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), over the presence of higher than permissible levels of lead and MSG.
However, since a ban is still in place in states like Punjab and Maharashtra, the company cannot start selling Maggi noodles immediately. It is currently in negotiation with various state authorities across the country for a free access to all markets.
“Now that the orders of the Hon’ble Bombay High Court have been complied with, we will make our best endeavour to commence the sale of MAGGI Noodles Masala within this month as well as continue engaging with States where permissions are needed or specific directions may be necessary. We are presently manufacturing MAGGI Noodles at three of our locations, at Nanjangud (Karnataka), Moga (Punjab) and Bicholim (Goa) and for the other two locations at Tahliwal and Pantnagar, we are engaging with the relevant authorities in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand to obtain directions for commencing manufacture of MAGGI Noodles,” Nestlé India’s statement added.
