UP court summons Nestle India, Easyday on July 1
Trouble for Nestle India deepened on Sunday as another state, now Uttarakhand, has picked up instant noodle brand Maggi samples to check if it contains more than permissible limits of lead and monosodium glutamate (MSG).
The Uttarakhand food safety department collected samples from Nestle’s Pantnagar plant and other cities, including Dehradun. “A team of state food safety department officials visited Nestle's plant at Pantnagar and collected eight samples of Maggi noodles, which were sent to the state government laboratories,” Pankaj Kumar Pandey, district magistrate of Udham Singh Nagar, said.
Meanwhile, a local court in Barabanki has summoned Nestle India and retailer Easyday on July 1 on the basis of a case filed by Uttar Pradesh Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The court of additional chief judicial magistrate on Saturday summoned six persons and the corporate entities. The “contaminated” batch of Maggi was collected by an UP FDA team from an Easyday store in Barabanki.
A Barabanki-based lawyer has also filed a case against Bollywood filmstars Amitabh Bachchan, Madhuri Dixit and Preity Zinta for endorsing Maggi as a healthy food. The case, filed in the court of the chief judicial magistrate, is likely to be heard on June 19.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India is looking into the matter too.
On Friday, Union food minister Ram Vilas Paswan had hinted that a class-action suit could be filed against Nestle India if a complaint was filed.
According to reports, some outlets have started to withdraw the product from counters to avoid trouble.
