Sago unit sealed for using banned chemicals

Officials collecting samples of adulterated sago ata manufacturing unit in Salem on Friday

A sago unit found to be manufacturing adulterated products was sealed by officials here on Friday.
A team led by T. Anuradha, District Designated Officer, Tamil Nadu Food Safety and Drug Administration Department, along with officials inspected a unit in Jagir Reddipatti and found rampant usage of banned chemical substances for whitening the sago.
As per the Food Safety and Standards Regulations, 2011, usage of chemical substance for whitening is poisonous and is banned.
Also, maize starch is mixed with sago and adulteration is being done. The unit was also functioning without license for the past two-and-half years.
Samples were taken and officials sealed the unit. Officials said that the sample would be sent for test and based on the results action will be taken.
