Food poisoning: probe begins into death of woman

The Assistant Commissioner of the Food Safety Department started an investigation into the incident in which a woman died after consuming biriyani at a function.
Saranya, 22, daughter of Eravil Chandran of Anthikkad, died after consuming biriyani at the marriage fixing ceremony of her neighbour at Anthikkad. Saranya collapsed after reaching her home from the function.
Though she was rushed to hospital, her life could not be saved.
Closure ordered
The Food Safety Assistant Commissioner B. Jayachandran ordered closure of the catering centre that served the biriyani. The catering centre at Puthenpeedika that supplied the biriyani did not have a food safety licence, according to officials.
More than 30 persons, who ate biriyani at the function, were also admitted to various hospitals with vomiting and stomach problems.
Though a preliminary investigation indicated it as a case of food poisoning, only the post mortem report would confirm the reason, Mr. Jayachandran said.
