FDA seizes gutkha worth 4.70 lakh from Bhiwandi

THANE: Sleuths of Food and Drugs Administration, Konkan Bhavan, Thane, raided a Bhiwandi-based godown and seized gutkha worth Rs 4.70 lakh on Friday.
The Narpoli police were successful in arresting one accused. However, another is still on the run. The seized items are in FDA possession at its Thane office premises.
The FDA team, led by assistant commissioner of FDA (food) Mahesh Chaudhary and food safety officer Santosh Sirosiya, cracked the whip on banned gutkha products stored at a godown in Poorna village of Bhiwandi, on Friday morning.
A first information report (FIR) was registered at Narpoli police station, based on which shopowner Lalit Sadashiv Chaudhary (35) has been arrested under section 328 of the Indian Penal Code as well as FDA rules for causing health hazards.
Various brands of gutkha have been confiscated in as many as 100 bags.
