Amendment in Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2015 to allow using old packaging material extended

New Delhi, July 6 (KNN) The amendments made in the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2015 to allow stakeholders to use old packaging material to enable stocks to be cleared has been extended up to October 31, 2016.
In a communication, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution said, “…On representations by the stake holders, the said advisory is being extended up to October 31, 2016, to use old packaging material. This advisory is being issued to ensure smooth transition accordingly.”
The letter, however, added that “this issues with the approval of Competent Authority.”
Talking to KNN, DV Malhan, Executive Secretary, All India Food Processors' Association (AIFPA), said, “There is lot of confusion and we sought a clarification from the legal metrology as well as FSSAI regarding this. It is duplicity.”
He said, “Since we made a representation, hence they have extended it. But I don’t think that the problem will be sorted out even after the extension.”
On May 14, 2015, the GOI, Department of Consumer Affairs published a notification in the Indian official gazette, amending the Legal Metrology (packaged commodities) Rules, 2011.
The important highlights of the amendment include: (a) Adopting the definition of retail packages as defined by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI); and (b) Allow the use of stickers to include all labelling requirement data on imported food packages
