Food poisoning: Xavier’s messed with norms

AHMEDABAD: St Xavier's College has come under the municipal scanner for serious lapses, including employing a contractor who did not have a health licence to cater food at the hostel mess. Also, trouble looms for the college for failing to inform the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) about the large number of students taking ill with food poisoning on the campus.
Health officials of the AMC said that they have sought an explanation from the college regarding these lapses that threatened the health of students. "Employing a caterer who did not have a health licence is a violation of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India norms," a health official said.
Nearly 50 students had taken severely ill with food poisoning on the college campus on Monday afternoon after eating lunch served at an orientation programme. The AMC later sealed the hostel mess.
The AMC was notified by Sterling Hospitals where some of the students had gone for treatment, and not by the college.
AMC officials said that they have secured samples of the mawa from which gulab jamuns served at the college were prepared. "Samples were also taken from the supplier of the mawa," the health official said.
