100 kg of artificially ripened mangoes seized in Salem

Officials of the Food Safety and Drug Administration Department have raided godowns and retail shops in the city and seized 100 kg of mangoes that were artificially ripened using calcium carbide.
A team led by District Designated Officer T. Anuradha and Food Safety Inspector visited wholesale godowns in Chinna Kadai Veedi in the city.

During inspection they found calcium carbide kept in-between mangoes and sold at a retail shop.
The workers and traders were asked not to use the banned chemical.Officials said that seven teams conducted checks at various parts of the district.
Packaged drinking water, fresh juices, beverages too would be monitored.
