DGP INFORMED OF AWBI PLAN TO INSPECT ‘SUSPECT’ LOCATIONS

The Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) had recently written to the chief secretaries, director generals of police, Animal Husbandry department directors of all States regarding the stopping of illegal slaughter cows, camels and other animals and taking action against the offenders for violation of Transport of Animals Rules on the occasion of Eid ul Zuha or Bakra Eid. AWBI co-opted member Gauri Maulekhi has written to the DGP BS Sidhu informing him about her plan to visit places notorious for illegal slaughter in Dehradun.
In her letter to the DGP, Maulekhi states that illegal sacrifice of animals is expected to take place at multiple locations in the state on Monday during the Eid festivities.
“No animal can be slaughtered except in a slaughterhouse licensed by the prescribed authority under the Food Safety and Standards Act 2006. But animals are illegally butchered in tents, in homes, on the streets and on grounds during Eid.
“A notorious slaughterhouse at Inamullah building has been reported for the past three years with video evidence of illegal slaughter taking place there but no action has been taken by the police whatsoever. Butchers in villages including Khushaalpur, Mehuwala, Kunja Grant in Dehradun and Sikroda, Jiwangarh, Jwalapur and Manglaur in Haridwar have accumulated a large number of cows for slaughter during Eid. Slaughter of cows is a non bailable offence with upto 10 years imprisonment in Uttarakhand but no action is taken by the police to prevent it. The Bhandaribagh slaughterhouse is the only designated place for animal slaughter in Dehradun but illegal slaughter takes place in hundreds of locations across the city defiantly and without fear of law. The local police exhibits fear and hesitation when asked to take action against any person who belongs to a certain religion and turn against the complainant, as has been observed in the past years. The slaughter of camels is totally prohibited as per the order of the Food Safety and Standards Authority, but dozens of camels have been brought to Udham Singh Nagar for slaughter in the Sultanpur Patti area. As I have been duly authorised by the AWBI to inspect registered and unregistered slaughterhouses in Uttarakhand, I shall be visiting some such places in Dehradun on Monday. I request you to please instruct the local police to cooperate likewise in implementing the law,” she states in the letter to the DGP.
