SHIVAMOGGA:The team of senior officials from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) that had conducted an inspection at the vegetarian food court adjacent to Gopi Circle in the city on Thursday and on Friday has expressed displeasure over the failure to maintain cleanliness.
The Shivamogga City Corporation had developed the food court at the conservancy lane adjacent to Gopi Circle in 2011. Mobile canteens operating on Kamala Nehru College Road were shifted to the food court. At present, the food court has 28 stalls.
K. Krishnappa, Food Safety Officer, FSSAI, told The Hindu that the inspection was conducted in the wake of complaints from customers about the quality of the food served and the overall lack of cleanliness.
During the inspection, it was found that many stalls had not made proper arrangements to wash dishes and provide clean drinking water for customers.
The owners of these stalls have been directed to take measures to clean the dishes with hot water. The workers, including the cook, waiters and the cleaners, have been directed to wear toques, aprons and gloves. The owners of the stalls have been asked to dispose the solid waste generated at the stalls regularly. The owners of all the 28 stalls have been directed to get their registration with FSSAI renewed and to arrange for a health check-up for all their workers from a certified medical practitioner and submit a report in prescribed form in this regard by the end of the month.
Mr. Krishnappa said that stern action would be initiated as per law against stall owners who fail to comply. The FSSAI would organise a workshop on personal hygiene for workers serving with the food court, he added.
During the inspection, some customers complained about a foul smell emanating from the drainage at the food court. It was found that there was a leak in the drain. The FSSAI has written to Shivamogga City Corporation to repair the drainage, he added.
