Health dept cracks down on shops

Health officials on Tuesday conducted a citywide crackdown following reports of petty shops selling ganja candies to children. They found one packet from a petty shop in Tondiarpet and sent this sample to the Indian Medicine department, who, by afternoon, confirmed the presence of cannabis in the chocolate.
Officials from the food safety and drug control department, police, and Chennai corporation, in four teams, raided 87 shops in Ashok Nagar, Perambur, Broadway , Sowcarpet and Purasawalkam on Tuesday .“Our intention was to seize such chocolates and we obtained one packet from a man named Motilal from his shop in Sundaram Pillai Nagar in Tondiarpet,“ said Kathiravan Rajagopalan, designated food officer. Officials also seized 187kg of tobacco products from near schools. Officials are plan ning to go ahead with the drive intensely for another week.
“We have issued warnings today . From tomorrow, we will start filing cases,“ said Kathiravan. A corporation official said they would start cancelling trade licences under the Public Health Act if they find sale of the substance.
