‘Ruchi’ from tomorrow

Drive to curb use of additives in food products
The State-level launch of Operation Ruchi (Restricting use of chemicals and harmful ingredients), a joint initiative of the Health Department and the Food Safety wing to regulate the use of additives and flavour enhancers in food products, will be held on August 3.
Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala will launch the drive at a function that will be presided over by Health Minister V.S. Sivakumar at the Government Women’s College. Mayor K. Chandrika, Shashi Tharoor, MP, and film-maker Rajasenan will also participate in the function.
According to Mr. Sivakumar, the government will ensure stringent steps to ensure the quality of food products kept on sale during the Onam season. Food safety registration/licenses will be made mandatory for food outlets. Inspections will be stepped up at check-posts.
Documents must be made available for scrutiny during transportation of vegetables and food products.
Raids will also be intensified to ensure quality of food products that are being sold at eateries in the State, he said.
