Exclusive- Heinz Glucon-D under FSSAI radar

New Delhi: Heinz Glucon- D may be the next on the radar of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). 
Continuing its hawkish stance, FSSAI is looking at all non-standardized products in the market including glucose syrups. Emailed queries sent to Heinz did not elicit any reply.
Sources told Bloomberg TV India that FSSAI is now looking to curb sales of Heinz Glucon-D as it flouts the rule. FSSAI claims Heinz Glucon-D had taken product approval under the patent rights for glucose syrup as per the Food safety and Standard Regulation 2011. However, all three flavors of Heinz Glucon- D do not comply with the food approval norms set by FSSAI.
While FSSAI’s Safety and Standards Regulation 2011 states that glucose syrup should contain 99.06 per cent glucose in its ingredients and the rest can be constituted with sucrose and other carbohydrates, the glucose content in Heinz Glucon-D orange flavor was just 40 per cent, Nimbu Pani 53 per cent and Aam Panna 50 per cent.
Heinz Glucon-D label does not specify the quantity of sucrose whereas it contains nearly 50 per cent of the sweetener.
Considering the violation of the norms as crucial and non-standardized, FSSAI is considering banning the Glucon-D product of Heinz very soon, sources said.
Recently, FSSAI sent a warning to Heinz disapproving its baked beans and Complan (pista and badam flavours) for non- compliance of the food safety and standards.
Heinz’s competitor Dabur India has passed muster for its Glucon-D product as it complied with the standards of the patent product they sought for approval.
Starting with Nestle’s Maggi, FSSAI has cracked the whip on a wide range packaged food products which have violated food standards. 
The list of products that have been pulled out of the stalls following FSSAI’s clamp down is getting longer every day. This has sent out an alarming message to the food processing industry that have to now be doubly sure about the product contents and the health risks before launching any product.
