On February 18, CII to organise food safety tech conference in Chennai

The Confederation of Indian Industry’s (CII) Tamil Nadu Technology Development and Promotion Centre would organise a one-day conference on food safety technologies on February 18, 2015 at Hotel Hilton in Chennai.
Abhishek Abraham, conference chairman and director, Aachi Masala Foods Pvt Ltd, said, “The objective of the conference to understand the latest progress in fundamental and applied food and feed science, research and development (R&D), innovative technology, quality and safety of raw materials, ingredients and additives, packaging and shelf life, sensory science and food and feed engineering.”
“Food production, from farm to fork, has become a globalised, complicated process. With each exchange in the food safety supply chain, vulnerabilities to the food safety system increase, and as a result, the government, retailers and consumers have intensified their scrutiny of food ingredient quality,” he added.
“The need for methods to monitor and verify food safety and quality is evidenced by the ever-growing list of food product recalls due to contamination. Effective techniques are necessary to help assess and manage risks and protect the consumer,” Abraham said.
“Continued research and innovation facilitate ongoing improvements in control strategies and the implementation of effective and efficient farm-to-fork safety and quality assurance systems,” he added.
The conference would comprise five sessions, covering five areas in the food processing industry.
The first session would focus on the concepts in food safety management; a robust food safety system; infrastructure in terms of physical and ideal laboratory equipment for food factories, tools and techniques to assess and improve food safety culture.
The second is the integration of safety and quality in product and process design, food safety by design: risk assessment and latest safety trends and technologies; permitted colours, flavours, additives and its impact on food safety and nutrition; advances in food packaging design for shelf life enhancement and integrity of quality and food safety, surveillance testing and new analytical techniques.
The third session would promote food safety operations. Quality data management; net content legislation fulfillment; formulation; traceability; measuring and monitoring devices, equipment calibration and performance verification and legal metrology would be the focus areas.
The fourth would highlight the food safety supply chain. It would address the issues of management; supplier contracts; scientifically valid sampling and testing, supply chain risk management and preventative controls and critical control points.
And the last session would focus on legal intricacies of non-compliance of food safety regulations. During this session, product recall strategies: crisis management and limiting the damage; fraudulent and counterfeit food; audit standards for fresh fruit; processed foods; retailers; institutional ingredient buyers and the differences in the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) standards, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) standards, BRC global standards and voluntary food safety guidelines would be deliberated upon.
About 200 senior management personnel, including food manufacturers, processors, growers, food service operators (FSO), distributors, consultants, warehouses, logistics firms, testing laboratories, food packaging suppliers, importers, exporters, food scientists, researchers , technologists and nutritionists, are expected to attend this conference.
CII members would have to pay a delegate fee of Rs 2,500, while non-members would have to pay Rs 3,500.
