JMC to outsource survey work for registering food joints

Jammu, January 23
Following its failure to rein in unregistered eateries and commercial establishments in Jammu due to corruption at various levels, the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has decided to outsource the survey work to private companies to ensure strict compliance to the rules.
A JMC official said the service providers would be provided the ward-wise list for all commercial eateries and food joints and they would be required to conduct a survey and verify registered and unregistered eateries.
“It will be the responsibility of the service providers to re-verify the unregistered eateries and enable their registration with the Jammu Municipal Corporation. The service providers will have to submit a prescribed form (duly filled) along with requisite information as per the time schedule provided by the JMC,” a municipal official said.
The food business operators include small retailers, roadside food vendors, hawkers, stall holders, cottage industries relating to food business and meat/mutton/poultry business operators.
As per the Commissioner, Food Safety, all food business operators have been directed to renew their existing licences, registration granted under the repealed Food Act/Order, under the Food Safety & Standards Act, 2006, and Food Safety & Standards (Licensing & Regulation of Food Business) Regulations, 2011.
“Some science-based standards for food article were laid down in the Act. This Act has enabled the Central government to control the food industry of the country,” said an official.
Under this food safety Act every food business retailer or manufacturer has to register with the licensing or registering authority. The food safety & standards Act says that even petty manufacturer shall follow the basic hygiene and safety requirements provided under these regulations.
