Deadline extension disappoints officials

The decision by Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to extend, for the fourth time, the deadline for food businesses to obtain licences has disappointed the Food Safety Wing officials.
In a circular issued on Monday, the FSSAI said that the deadline for food business operators to convert/renew their existing licences and registration had been extended to February 4, 2015.
Established under Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, the FSSAI is a statutory authority created for laying down science-based standards for food articles and to regulate the entire sector.
A senior official said that the repeated extensions were creating a negative culture among food merchants that they would never have to get licences as the deadline would be extended yet again.
Just around 18 per cent of the total 26,691 food business, including ration shops and Government school hostels, in Coimbatore district had valid licences/registration now, the official added.
