The Food Safety and Drug Administration Department has asked bakeries to follow the guidelines in packaging and labelling as given in the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Regulations, 2011.
A press release from District Designated Officer M. Kavikumar said that packages should contain manufacturing date and expiry day of the product, manufacturer’s details, ingredients, batch number or lot number and licence number of the manufacturers. Also, packages should be properly packed and sealed as per guidelines given in Sections 2.2, 2.3 and 2.4 of the act. As per the Food Safety Act, use of potassium bromide is banned.
Hence, bakeries should not use the banned substance in manufacturing jam, jelly or chocolates. Use of cyclamates in soft drinks such as orange or lemon juice is also banned. Hence, manufacturers should desist from such activities.
All the manufacturers were asked not to use the banned substance in bakery items and warned of action if violations are found.
