Traders demand changes in Food and Safety Act

Seek licence for lifetime instead of one year
Chandigarh, September 2 Traders pushed for lifetime licence on the pattern of value added tax (VAT) and the Income Tax Act, instead of issuing one-year licence and its renewal every year under the Food Safety and Standard Act.
The demand was raised during an interaction meeting of the Food Safety and Standard Department and the Chandigarh Beopar Mandal (CBM), which was held in Sector 35 to clarify traders’ queries and discuss measures to rationalise the Food Safety and Standard Act, 2006, and Rules 2011.
The meeting was attended by Rakesh Chandra Sharma, Director (Enforcement), Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), Sukhwinder Singh Designated Officer Food Safety Cell, Chandigarh, and CBM members Charanjiv Singh, Raj Kumar Bansal, Ramkaran Gupta, Purushottam Mahajan, Anil Vohra, BK Sood, Jagdish Kapoor, Kamaljit Singh Panchi, Naresh Mahajan, Balwinder Singh and Rajan Mahajan.
Charanjiv Singh, president, CBM, said If any food business operator had more than one premises of operation such as an office, shop or a godown, it should be added in original licence instead of the additional licence for additional premises. This practice is already prevalent under the VAT Act and the Income Tax Act, he suggested.
Kamaljit Singh Panchi, adviser, CBM, said an advisory committee should be formed under the Food And Safety Act in which representation should be given to the Chandigarh Beopar Mandal.
Rakesh Sharma said he would forward these suggestions to the committee headed by Dr Tarsem Chand, Director, Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, which was already formed to consider such suggestion and recommend changes in law.
