NATIONAL GAMES - Squad ensures safe food for athletes

Three squads of the food safety department are monitoring the food being supplied to athletes and officials participating in the National Games.Food safety officials said that they have cleared the Games menu for all days and are collecting samples twice a day from each venue. “We have not received any complaint on the quality so far. But, there have been some complaints regarding taste. It is quiet natural as people are coming from different parts of the country. Every day the menu is fixed,“ said senior food inspector of the mobile vigilance squad in Ernakulam Abdul Majeed T A, adding that all raw ma terials were purchased earlier and random sampling was done to screen items.
There are four members in each squad and officials are available 24 hours a day. “We have been on duty since January 28 and will be there till the Games conclude,“ said Beena V K, assistant commissioner, food safety intelligence, central region.
The squad is also checking the 13 hotels where participants and other officials are accommodated.
“These hotels, as well as two places, where the catering agency prepares food are under our observation. Earlier, we had finished pre-inspection procedures,“ said K Ajith Kumar, assistant food safety commissioner, Ernakulam.
