Duo gets jail for selling ‘unsafe’ pappadams

PONDA: A judicial magistrate first class (JMFC), Ponda, recently convicted two food vendors and sentenced them to undergo simple imprisonment for 60 days and to pay a fine of 20,000, for manufacturing and selling 'pappadams' declared as unsafe for consumption under the Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and Rules/Regulations, 2011.
Mohammad Ameen of Limra Traders, Coimbatore, and Nizam Umar Farooq, from Merces, Tiswadi, were found selling 'pappadams' at the Goa Shopping Festival at Ponda during a raid conducted by food safety officers attached to the directorate of food and drugs administration (FDA).
FDA officials collected samples of the 'pappadams', which were tested and declared unsafe for consumption by the director, referral laboratory, Mysore, due to the presence of colour which was above the permissible limit of 100ppm.
Rajiv R Korde, a food safety officer of the FDA, had filed the case against the duo for selling the unsafe 'pappadams'. The court found them guilty, the officials said.
