Civic body cracks down on vendors at Marina Beach

Continuing its drive, the city corporation launched another crackdown on vendors selling unhygienic food on Marina Beach.
Officials inspected 620 shops on the beach and seized spurious food, including 75kg of stale fish, 130 litres of spurious oil and 780 water packets. The cseized food items were later destroyed.
Many beachgoers complain that these raids are an eyewash and the civic body should prevent the violating shops from continuing business.
“The food safety department has to conduct such inspections to ensure the quality of food items. The corporation’s role is to regulate unauthorised hawkers on the beach. Unfortunately, civic body is not doing their part” said S Kumar, a regular beachgoer.
In March 2012, the civic body conducted a headcount and found that 1,212 vendors did business on the Marina. It decided last year to set up 1,200 kiosks for the vendors.
The civic body’s proposals stipulate that only mobile carts will be permitted within the beach area, and identity cards will be issued to hawkers. There will be drop gates at entry points, and ven dors carrying identity cards alone will be allowed to enter the beach. But nothing has been implemented so far.
Health officials say they have discovered holes dug by rodents. “We have placed 72 rat traps and killed 27 rodents. Action will be initiated to trap more rats and also will prevent cattle rearing on lawns” said a corporation official said.
They said beach goers continued to buy eatables that were prepared in unhygienic surroundings and that consumption of such items might lead to health hazards.
The officials asked people to check the manufacturing date and batch number before purchasing soft drinks and packaged drinking water. On an average, one lakh people visit the beach during weekends and 30,000 during weekdays.
