Chhattisgarh food commissioner promises to crack down on extortionists

Following a case of extortion by P L Sakshi, a food inspector posted at Narharpur development block in Chhattisgarh's Kanker district, the state food commissioner M K Raut promised that action would be initiated against those found to be involved in the malpractice.
Officials of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) nabbed Sakshi – who recently demanded Rs 12,000 from Deepak Kumar Jain, who owns a grocery shop – from his residence, and arrested him. Raut said Jain was not Sakshi's sole victim.
“He would extort money from 24 other food business operators (FBOs) in Rani Dongri Village in Charama tehsil. The amount he demanded was about Rs 500 per FBO per month. Jain was, in fact, his point of contact for the nefarious deed,” the food commissioner added.
Raut said, “Recently, Sakshi called Jain and asked him to collect Rs 12,000 from all the shopkeepers and hand the money over to him without informing the police. But Jain registered a complaint against Sakshi. Upon its verification, the ACB arrested him.”
“The ACB officials have recovered the extorted amount from Sakshi, and cases have been registered against him under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, has been registered against him,” he said.
“Earlier, we asked all the food inspectors not to get involved in malpractices, but they turned a deaf ear to our order. Now strict action would be taken against food inspectors who would be involved in any malpractice.”
