Adulteration is a crime. Shall we fight it?

This refers to the editorial, “All that’s white isn’t milk” (January 13).
Adulteration of food stuff has become the order of the day despite its terrible impact on the consumers’ health.  The contamination of milk, particularly, is a cause for concern as it is an essential commodity also commonly consumed by children for its high nutrient values.
Milk is an important item in human nutrition. However, to make it safe for consumption, it has to be handled carefully from the time of milking through the transportation and distribution.
In this country milk in mostly sourced from small-scale farmers but the conditions under which they process the milk are often very unhygienic. If they had observed even the basic conditions for hygiene, the quality milk in the market would have been slightly better than the samples show. Also, the adulteration milk and allied products only gets worse during the festive season.
Total elimination of adulteration is not going to be easy. it fact, it may never happen. Thosee who indulge in such acts are seasoned professionals. However, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India must take preventive measures to contain the menace.
